Eid Mubarak to all who observe! Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” is the second of two main holidays celebrated in Islam. Muslims believe that Eid al-Adha signifies the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim, known as Abraham in Christianity and Judaism, to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as ordered by Allah. It focuses on sacrifice, the pilgrimage to Mecca and giving to those less fortunate.

Mental Health Awareness Month - Anxiety

What is anxiety?

Occasional anxiety is a normal part of life. Many people worry about things such as health, money, or family problems. But anxiety disorders involve more than temporary worry or fear. For people with an anxiety disorder, the anxiety does not go away and can get worse over time. The symptoms can interfere with daily activities such as job performance, schoolwork, and relationships.

Please join us in thanking the PHNs for their hard work and dedication to FCPS students.

Calendar Reminders

2023-2024 School Year Calendar

Fri, May 3rd - Orthodox Good Friday
No School for Students - Teacher Work Day

Friday, May 3, is Orthodox Good Friday, and a teacher work day. Millions of Orthodox Christians commemorate Good Friday, also known as “Great Friday” to remember the events leading up to Jesus' crucifixion. There will be no school for students that day.

Sun, May 5th - Orthodox Easter

A joyful Easter to our Orthodox Christian community! Many Orthodox Christians in the U.S. celebrate Easter according to the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, which differs from the Western date we are most familiar with. Easter is a time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be the Son of God.

Lean more about all of the FCPS 2023-24 Religious and Cultural Observances.

Congratulations to Ms. Peters!  2024 Virginia School Counseling Association School Counselor of the Year!!

Our very own Ms. Valerie Peters has been named the 2024 Virginia School Counseling Association School Counselor of the Year!! For Ms. Peters, school counselor isn't a title, it's a passion. This dedication to fostering student success is woven throughout her impressive career with Fairfax County Public Schools. From guiding elementary students through transitions to spearheading equity initiatives at the district level, Ms. Peters has consistently demonstrated a commitment to creating a safe, positive and enriching learning environment for all.

Building a Foundation for Success

Ms. Peter's journey began in the classroom, where she honed her teaching skills and developed a deep understanding of diverse learning styles. This experience proved invaluable as she transitioned into school counseling, allowing her to connect with students on a personal level and address their academic and social-emotional needs.

A Commitment to Equity

Throughout her career, Ms. Peters has championed equity in education. As a School Based Equity School Lead, she spearheaded professional development programs to cultivate culturally responsive practices among faculty and staff. This dedication to inclusivity extends beyond the classroom walls. Her work with the College Partnership Program empowers first-generation college students to navigate the application process and pursue higher education.

A Leader Who Inspires

Ms. Peter's leadership extends beyond individual initiatives. She actively seeks opportunities to share her expertise and empower others. Her involvement in the Vertical Leadership Team and the School Counseling Leadership Cohort exemplifies her commitment to collaboration and professional growth. Her willingness to mentor and guide colleagues further strengthens the school counseling network within Fairfax County.

A Force for Positive Change

Ms. Peter's dedication has been recognized at both the school and district levels. Being recognized as the Virginia School Counselor of the Year in 2024 is a testament to the impact she has made on countless students and educators. Calendar Reminders

2023-2024 School Year Calendar

Passover - April 22 and 23rd (Half O-Days)

Many Jewish communities in the United States celebrate Passover, a recognition of the deliverance of Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Passover is also known as Pesah, Pesach, or the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Many Jewish families in the United States eat a ceremonial meal known as the Seder, which involves telling the story of the exodus from Egypt as well as eating various symbolic foods, such as meat of the paschal lamb and bitter herbs, recalling the harsh life of slavery. Learn more about Passover in NatGeo Kids.

Monday, April 22, and Tuesday, April 23, are designated half-O days in recognition of the first two days of Passover. Half-O days are full school days, but important events will not be held after school on those days.

Theravada New Year - April 24th (O day)

In countries where Theravada Buddhism is the most dominant religion, New Year is celebrated for three days from the first full moon in April. Theravada means “the teachings of the elders.” Celebrations begin with people attending the local temple in the morning for chanting and meditation. In the afternoon they have a water festival in which they meet the Buddha image and pay respect to the elderly by watering their hands together. Building sandcastles is also one of the most popular activities during this day of celebration.

Wednesday, April 24, is designated as an O day for Theravada New Year. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on these days, however tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Lean more about all of the FCPS 2023-24 Religious and Cultural Observances.

Librarians develop lessons that are meaningful to students and help them develop critical thinking, inquiry, and information literacy skills. By creating a safe environment for all students to be engaged and curious learners, FCPS libraries are places where everyone belongs.
