Boys Doubles State Champions
Robinson Boys Tennis Doubles Team won the state championship title.
The Robinson Doubles Team of senior Alex Krawietz and sophomore Drew Rummel won the 2018 VHSL State Doubles title at the state tournament held at Deep Run High School in Richmond. In the morning, they encountered the familiar team of Matt O'Connor and Ryan Nguyen from Oakton. They are a dangerous team but the Ram duo broke serve on the first opportunity and never looked back. Rummel set the tone with several returns down the line. They ran out to a 4-1 lead and closed it out by the score of 6-2. Their movement, particularly at the net, did not afford the Oakton team many opportunities. They also made some great gets on seemingly winning shots by the Cougars, turning losing points into winners or errors by their opponents. The Oakton pair played evenly in the second set, but the Rams broke free to go up 5-2, and then won the set 6-3.
The Rams came out motivated, with good energy and intensity levels. They dominated the net and their return of service was fantastic!
In the finals, they encountered the team from Cosby in the Richmond area, Andy Novak & Kamil Kawka. Nice players but the Rams were at a different level and completely controlled the match in every aspect. Solid serves, forceful returns, controlled the net--total domination. The pace of shots overwhelmed them. The intensity which the Robinson duo brought to the match seemed to intimidate the Cosby team which wasn't used to the level of competition.
On Thursday, Drew participated in the Singles Tournament. He fell to the champion, Will Pak (Chantilly), 6-0, 6-0. Pak did not lose a game in the entire tournament.
