Growth Mindset for Middle School Students and Math Course Selection
Growth mindset is a simple, powerful concept studied by Carol Dweck, and explained in her book Mindset; The New Psychology of Success. Essentially, if you have a growth mindset, you believe that your intelligence and abilities - how well you do in math class, how you backhand a tennis ball, how effectively you manage your time - can improve with effort. Jo Boaler takes this a step farther with her Mathematical Mindsets, with specifics on how a growth mindset applies to mathematics.
In this session, families will explore the value of growth mindset and hear strategies to help children develop one for themselves and their children. There will be an overview of middle school and high school math classes offered at Robinson Secondary School. In addition to the overview, there will be a discussion on math readiness, adult praise and how a growth mindset can help a child not to give up if they are struggling in math.
