High School Testing
SOL
SOL Writing Test
March 1 and March 15, 2021
Action required by Friday, 2/12
For students enrolled in: English 11, English 11 Honors, IB English Lit I, and IB Lang & Lit I
Students enrolled in the courses above are identified to take the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) End-of-Course (EOC) English: Writing Test in March 2021 to earn a verified credit that is required to graduate with a standard or advanced studies diploma. The test will be offered in person on Monday, March 1 and Monday, March 15 at Robinson Secondary School. We are testing on Mondays to maximize instructional time.
Description of the SOL Writing Test
Students traditionally take the EOC Writing SOL test over two days: one day they edit writing in a multiple-choice format test, then the other day they are given a prompt to which they write a persuasive essay (VDOE sample prompts here). Both parts are combined to give one score.
SOL Flexibilities for this year
There are some SOL flexibilities around testing this year. One flexibility is to defer testing until next school year. The other flexibility is to take both parts of the writing test in one day instead of two. Other details of the testing are:
- The one-day test will be in person on Monday, 3/1 starting at 8:00. (The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requires parent consent for students to take both test components on a single day, which would occur on March 1.)
- For two-day testing, students would take one part on Monday, 3/1 starting at 8:00 and the other part on Monday, 3/15 starting at 8:00.
The SOL test is untimed, but students must finish by the end of the school day. Students will be tested following FCPS COVID-19 protocols for social distancing, wearing masks, and health screenings. Additional information on FCPS health procedures can be found on the FCPS website at: https://www.fcps.edu/node/41890
Impact of Deferring
Due to Covid-related flexibility, VDOE will not require students to take this assessment in March 2021. Deferring this test will not impact the student’s English course grade; however, students must still earn a verified credit in English: Writing to meet VDOE graduation requirements. Students who defer testing in March will have to take a Writing test later this year or next school year. Future options are described below. Parents and students should work with the school to determine what is best for the student.
Future Testing options
The timing of a student’s graduation plans should be taken into consideration when considering the following options:
SOL EOC English: Writing Test - FCPS will offer the SOL English Writing test again in Fall 2021 (usually October and December) and Spring 2022 (usually March and April).
WorkKeys Business Writing Test - FCPS will offer the ACT WorkKeys Business Writing assessment in Spring 2021, Fall 2021, and Spring 2022. This standardized, timed test is approved by VDOE to fulfill the writing verified credit requirement and consists of a single business-related writing prompt administered online, in-person at school. Preparation for this assessment typically occurs outside of English class as business writing is not part of the standard curriculum for these courses. Contact the school for more information or visit: https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/workkeys-for-employers/assessments/business-writing.html
To adequately plan for in-person student testing, testing deferrals, as well as meal and transportation services, please complete the Google form linked below by Friday, February 12.
